Helpful Tools for Reading Series

Sun, 01/19/2020 - 2:23pm -- Reference

Did you just finish a book from a series and want to read more, but don’t know where to start?  Or maybe you’ve found a new author and want to make sure you start at the beginning and read the books in order?  Or are you just looking for the most recent book featuring your favorite detective?  Reading series can be challenging sometimes, but here at the Bedford Public Library we have tools to help keep your reading on track!

For those who like to browse the stacks for their next book, many of our popular series, especially those in the Mystery and SciFi sections, actually have the series order printed right on the spine label.  So if you were just getting started on the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child, you could browse “Child” in the Mystery section and find the spine label that says “MY Child #1 Jack Reacher,” then check out The Killing Floor, confident that you’ve found the first book in the series.

Looking for a less hands-on approach?  We are fortunate to have NoveList Plus – a great resource for readers and book lovers – integrated right into our online catalog.  If you’re looking for the next book in a series, all you have to do is search for the title you’ve just read.  Once you’ve found it, click on “Full Display,” then scroll down until you see a section entitled “More Like This.”  When you click on this section, you’ll be shown a list of books in this series, in order.  If you click on the title of that next book, a link will even bring you right to the book’s listing in the catalog and you can request it from there after you login to your library account.

Still can’t find the book you’re looking for?  We’re always happy to help at the Reference Desk!  When in doubt, you can always stop by to chat, call us at 472-2300 or contact us by email at

Happy reading!
