And the winner is...Woodpecker Wants a Waffle, written and illustrated by Steve Breen. Benny the woodpecker would go to any lengths to get a taste of yummy waffles with syrup at the local restaurant! The coveted Ladybug Children's Book Award is indigenous to New Hampshire, the winner being determined by the votes of youngsters from age three to Grade 3 throughout the state. It is sponsored by New Hampshire's Center for the Book. "Woodpecker" received 4,924 votes out of 21,466 ballots cast. Taking second place was Mo Willem's charming story about bread, entitled Nanette's Baguette. The delightful Dragon Was Terrible, written by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by Greg Pizzoli, came in a close third.
