Kamishibai

Come join us for a special kind of Story Time - Kamishibai!! It is pronounced Ka-me-she-by and means “Paper Theater.”

Popular in Japan in the early 1900’s as a means of entertainment and commerce, Kamishibai employs  the use of a small theater, large illustrated cards, and theatrical voice.

The teller of the stories would arrive on bicycle and clap his wooden clappers to alert the children in the village to come for a story! The teller would then sell sweet treats to his audience as a way of earning his living.  We’ll be making treats at the end that you can take home and share!
