SRP Kick-Off
We're kicking off the summer in style with juggling comedian, Bryson Lang! He uses ball-spinning, object-manipulation and his tremendous sense of humor in this highly professional family friendly routine. Audience participation is included. Come and see why Bryson has been called "The Cure for the Common Show"! Please note: Due to construction work at Town Hall, our kick-off venue this year will be the McKelvie School Cafe, on Friday, June 17 at 1:30pm. Fun for all ages! On-line registration begins June 6th.
Junior Librarians Wanted!
This year's summer reading theme is: "On Your Mark, Get Set...Read!" We need some coaches to encourage kids by checking off their reading charts and giving them incentives prizes.
They will also need assistance in the Batting Cage (craft area). How old do you have to be? If you will be entering 5th grade in the fall, you are old enough. If you are 16 and have some spare time to help out, we welcome you! How much time will it take out of your summer? Very little...most kids average 2 or 3 shifts of 2 hours each over the course of the program.
Great Stone Face Winner
And the winner is... EL DEAFO, by Cece Bell. New Hampshire students in grades 4-6 have spoken: they chose this graphic novel out of a field of 20 superb books for this age group, with 786 votes. The second place winner was FISH IN A TREE, by Lynda Mullay Hunt, with 635 votes. Both of these titles center on young people facing disabilities...their popularity speaks well for the compassionate nature of our youth. The third place finisher was THE TERRIBLE TWO, a rib-tickling school comedy by Jory John and Mac Barnett, coming in close behind at 633 votes.
Ladybug Award
The Ladybug books for the new year are in and on display in the Children's Library! This award is decided by the children of New Hampshire, ranging in age from 3 years old to Grade 3. A committee of children's librarians from all over the state convenes to compile a list of 10 of the best new picture books...then kids get to vote for their favorite one in November, during Children's Library Week. This initiative is sponsored by New Hampshier's Center for the Book.
Great Stone Face Voting
The votes are in...soon we'll know who won this year's Great Stone Face Award! NH youngsters in Grades 4-6 cast have their ballots for their favorite title on the list. These books have been on display for almost a year now, and will soon be replaced by the books on the new selection list for 2016-17. A committee of children's librarians from around the state preview the newest literature for kids, and they work diligently to create a list reflecting writing quality, kid appeal, gender and genre interests, and age range.
